Diego Sarmiento

Operations Manager

Diego was born in South America and is proud to be a naturalized US citizen. He loves this country and is grateful for more than 20 years here.

Diego grew up in a challenging environment so knows from first-hand experience about the impact that insecurity has on a child’s psyche. He also knows what a mentor can do to guide a child through tough circumstances. Diego credits his grandmother’s stability and influence with shaping the course of his life.

Diego also knows what it is like to be an immigrant. After studying Economics and Marketing in his home country, he came to study in the U.S. with only limited English language skills. Once he could work here, he started in warehouses, on assembly lines and then call centers. He knows the challenge of building a life here from scratch.

Ultimately, Diego discovered his passion for social work and, for more than ten years, he worked in community assistance programs, helping people navigate challenges and hard times.

Diego is thrilled to bring the richness of his life and professional experiences to Friends of the Children, which he views as a way to pay forward the blessings he has found in this country.

When not working, Diego loves to spend time with his own two children and wife of 21 years, playing soccer, or traveling.
